Investing in the Future of Logistics

Technology is changing the way businesses operate, and the logistics industry is no exception. From managing stock and booking transport to tracking deliveries and accessing important information, customers increasingly expect their logistics providers to offer greater visibility, flexibility and control.

At Browns Distribution, we believe that delivering a great service means continually looking for ways to improve it. We've been moving freight and supporting businesses since 1955, and while a lot has changed over those years, our commitment to providing a reliable, customer-focused service hasn't.

What has changed is the technology behind how we deliver it.

With the recent introduction of our in-house Transport Management System (TMS), Touchbase, and our partnership with Clarus WMS, we've taken two significant steps forward in strengthening our transport and warehousing capabilities.

But for us, the real value of these investments isn't simply having more advanced systems. It's what those systems allow us to do for our customers.

Investing in Smarter Logistics

Modern logistics involves much more than moving goods from one location to another. Behind every delivery is a network of people, processes and information that needs to work together to keep operations running smoothly.

As supply chains become more complex and customer expectations continue to grow, having the right technology in place is becoming increasingly important.

That's why we've continued to invest in systems that support the way our business operates today, while giving us the flexibility to adapt to what our customers might need tomorrow.

Our recent investments in Touchbase and Clarus represent a particularly important milestone in that development.

Together, they strengthen two fundamental areas of our business: transport and warehousing. While each platform serves a different purpose, both have been introduced with the same objective in mind: making logistics easier, more efficient and more transparent for the businesses that rely on us.

Touchbase: Bringing Greater Visibility to Transport

For businesses arranging regular deliveries, having access to accurate information can make a considerable difference to the working day.

Whether it's checking the progress of a consignment, retrieving a proof of delivery or organising tomorrow's collections, these are tasks that can quickly become time-consuming when information isn't readily available.

Our new Touchbase Transport Management System was developed to make managing freight simpler.

Built entirely by our in-house development team, Touchbase brings our transport operations together within one connected platform, providing greater visibility for both our customers and our operational teams.

Through the Touchbase Customer Portal, customers can manage bookings, track deliveries, access documentation and view important account information without needing to contact us for every update.

And while being able to track a delivery or download a document might sound like a relatively small improvement, it's often these everyday changes that make the biggest difference.

Less time spent searching for information means more time available for the work that matters.

Beyond the customer-facing portal, Touchbase also supports our drivers and operational colleagues, helping information flow more efficiently throughout the transport process.

It's a major development for Browns, but more importantly, it's a system designed around the practical requirements of the people who use our services every day.

Clarus: Strengthening Our Warehousing Capabilities

Of course, efficient logistics doesn't begin and end with transport.

For businesses that rely on warehousing, being able to manage inventory accurately, monitor stock movements and respond to changing requirements is just as important as getting products delivered on time.

That's where our recent partnership with Clarus WMS comes in.

Operating from our 87,000 sq. ft. warehousing facility in Stoke-on-Trent, Browns already provides storage and logistics solutions for businesses across a wide range of industries.

The introduction of Clarus strengthens that offering by providing more advanced warehouse management capabilities, greater stock visibility and improved flexibility when managing complex customer requirements.

Through its dedicated customer portal, customers can access live inventory information, monitor stock activity and benefit from detailed tracking and audit trails.

For businesses managing large or frequently changing inventories, having that information readily available can make planning and decision-making considerably easier.

It also gives us greater flexibility to accommodate individual customer requirements, including opportunities to connect with existing business systems and develop more tailored warehousing solutions.

We know that no two customers operate in exactly the same way. The introduction of Clarus gives us more tools to support those differences, rather than expecting every business to work around the same processes.

What Does Smarter Technology Mean for Our Customers?

It's easy to talk about new technology in terms of features, functionality and system capabilities. But ultimately, what matters is how those improvements translate into a better customer experience.

For some businesses, that might mean being able to check the progress of an important delivery without making a phone call. For others, it could be having instant access to stock information, reducing repetitive administration or finding more efficient ways to manage higher volumes of freight.

The benefits will naturally look different depending on the customer and how they use our services.

However, there are a few areas where our recent investments are making a particularly important difference.

Greater visibility: Whether customers are managing stock in our warehouse or tracking deliveries across the UK, having easier access to accurate information helps them make better-informed decisions.

Less manual administration: From self-service transport bookings to digital stock management, technology can reduce the time spent on repetitive tasks and unnecessary communication.

More flexibility: With systems designed to accommodate different operational requirements, we have greater scope to adapt our services as our customers' businesses develop.

A more connected approach: By strengthening the technology supporting both our transport and warehousing operations, we're building a more capable logistics offering across the business.

And perhaps most importantly, these improvements don't just benefit our existing customers. They also allow us to support businesses with more complex requirements that may previously have needed several different providers or solutions.

Technology Backed by Experience

For all the benefits that technology brings, there's one thing we believe remains just as important as ever: the people behind the service.

A great logistics operation isn't built on software alone.

It relies on experienced drivers, knowledgeable warehouse colleagues, transport planners, customer service teams and people who understand the challenges our customers face.

Technology should make their jobs easier, not replace the value they bring.

That's something we've kept firmly in mind throughout our recent developments.

By reducing repetitive administration, improving access to information and making everyday processes more efficient, our systems help our teams spend more time on the areas where their knowledge and experience really matter.

Because while customers might appreciate being able to track a delivery themselves, there will always be situations where speaking to someone who understands their business is the best solution.

We want to offer both.

Modern technology that gives customers greater independence, supported by the personal service and relationships that have been central to Browns for more than 70 years.

Building for What's Next

The introduction of Touchbase and Clarus marks an exciting period of development for Browns Distribution, but we certainly don't see it as the finishing line.

Technology will continue to evolve, and so will the needs of the businesses we work with.

By investing in our own transport technology and strengthening our warehousing capabilities, we're creating opportunities to improve existing services, introduce new functionality and develop more flexible solutions for the future.

It's about making sure we're not just keeping pace with the logistics industry, but actively investing in the capabilities our customers will need as their businesses grow.

We've always believed that good logistics should make life easier for our customers. Now, with better technology supporting our teams across transport and warehousing, we have even more opportunities to make that happen.

Smarter systems, stronger service and the same commitment to our customers that Browns has been built on since 1955.
