Class 1 Drivers Wanted: Join Browns as we Continue to Grow

Browns Distribution is growing, and we’re looking for experienced Class 1 HGV drivers to join us for the journey. New contract wins, continued business growth and the launch of new systems across the operation mean there’s plenty happening at Browns. As our customer base and transport requirements continue to expand, we’re strengthening our driving team with more Class 1 drivers. But we know choosing your next driving job isn’t just about finding another set of keys. It’s about how you’re treated once you have them. Trusted to get on with the job One thing that comes through again and again in feedback from our drivers is how much they value being trusted to do their job without constantly being chased. Professional drivers know their role. They don’t need somebody ringing every few minutes asking where they are or pushing them from one drop to the next. At Browns, our planners give drivers a clear plan for the day and trust them to get on with it. As one driver put it: “All round good company to work for, pays decent hours, good planning, you don't get called up every 5 minutes, you're left to do the work that's planned for you.” Another said: “Decent company, new trucks, pretty much left alone by the office staff to focus on your day. Not chasing you up.” That doesn't mean drivers are left without support. When something does go wrong, the transport team is there to help. That balance is important to us: giving experienced drivers the freedom to manage their day, while making sure the office is there when they genuinely need support. As Browns grows, maintaining that sense of trust, respect and accessibility remains important to us. Investing in our drivers and fleet Growth at Browns is being supported by continued investment across the business. Our drivers have regularly commented positively on new trucks, trailers and the standard of the fleet. Since 2023, Browns has invested £5.6 million in its fleet, adding more than 30 new tractor units and over 40 new trailers. Drivers joining Browns can expect their own allocated modern truck rather than swapping between vehicles, with our fleet including Scania, MAN and Mercedes trucks. Every cab comes with a fridge and microwave, helping to make life on the road that little bit more comfortable. We’ve invested in the technology our drivers use on the road too. Our new driver app keeps upcoming jobs clear, reduces paperwork and sends job changes straight to the driver’s device, helping to make the working day simpler. We're also continuing to invest in the people behind the wheel. Our current Class 1 driver package includes: £15.60 per hour Guaranteed 50 hours per week £30 night-out allowance £50 enhanced allowance for Friday nights out Quarterly Performance Bonus up to £200 £300 Annual Retention/Performance Bonus Premium rate for weekend work Opportunities for overtime and weekend work if you would like to earn more An additional day's holiday for every year of service, up to 33 days A dedicated Driver Training Manager A dedicated Driver Representative, giving drivers a voice within the business Funded Driver CPC Funded eye tests and medicals Funded driver card renewals Ongoing in-house training Opportunities to progress Free company uniform It’s all part of making Browns somewhere good drivers want to stay, not simply somewhere they come to work. Looking for your next Class 1 driving role? We’re looking for reliable, experienced Class 1 HGV Drivers who take pride in what they do and want to become part of a growing, family-run logistics business in Stoke-on-Trent. If you’re looking for modern equipment, approachable management and a team that will support you when you need it — while also trusting you to get on with the job without being chased every five minutes — we’d like to hear from you. A New Chapter Begins at Browns

Introducing Touchbase, our new Transport Management System Every major investment Browns has made over the past few years has been driven by the same ambition: to make our business stronger, our service better and our customers more successful. That ambition has shaped the way we've invested in our people, our fleet and our facilities. It has challenged us to continually improve the way we work and look beyond today's requirements, building a business that's ready for tomorrow. Today, we're proud to introduce our biggest technology investment yet. Meet Touchbase, the new Transport Management System built by us, for you. Developed entirely by our in-house team, Touchbase brings customers, drivers, warehouse teams and operations together through one connected technology platform, supporting the movement of freight from booking through to final delivery. Built around the way we move freight Transport Management Systems sit at the heart of modern logistics operations. They connect the people, processes and information required to get freight where it needs to go. But as Browns has grown, so have the requirements of our operation and our customers. We wanted technology that could support the full breadth of our operation while giving us the freedom to shape how it develops as Browns grows. Rather than adapting our business to fit an off-the-shelf TMS, we decided to build our own. Touchbase has been engineered from the ground up using decades of operational experience in pallet distribution and the knowledge of the people who work with our customers and move their freight every day. It has also been built to connect the different services we provide. Whether we're moving a consignment through the pallet network, on our general haulage fleet, as a full load or as part of a contract logistics operation, Touchbase brings the information together within one platform. One system. One live operational picture. Connecting every stage of the freight journey Touchbase isn't a single application. It's a technology platform that connects our customers, drivers, warehouse teams and operational colleagues, with dedicated applications supporting each stage of the freight journey. From collection through to final delivery, information can flow between each part of the operation as it happens. Touchbase can capture and share live information including collection confirmation, photographs at collection and delivery, delivery ETAs, dynamic tracking, status updates and proof of delivery. For customers, that creates the kind of courier-level visibility we've all become accustomed to when tracking everyday deliveries, applied to the movement of commercial freight. For our teams, it means working from the same live information throughout the operation. The result is a more connected and informed service, with fewer gaps between what happens on the road, in the warehouse, within our operation and what our customers can see. Built by Browns Creating Touchbase represents a major investment in the future of Browns. Owning our technology gives us far greater control over how it develops. Instead of waiting for a third-party system to introduce a feature or change the way something works, our development can be driven directly by operational insight and customer feedback. When our customers' requirements change, Touchbase can change with them. When our teams identify a better way of working, we have the ability to build it. And when new opportunities emerge to connect systems, automate processes or share better information, we have a platform ready to support them. "Touchbase represents far more than a new piece of technology. It's a major investment in the future of Browns and in the service we provide our customers every day. Developing our own Transport Management System gives us the freedom to innovate faster, respond directly to customer feedback and continue improving the way we operate. This is a significant milestone for our business, and we're incredibly proud of what our team has created." David Brown Jnr, Managing Director Introducing the Touchbase Customer Portal At the heart of the Touchbase experience for our customers, is the Customer Portal, bringing the capabilities of our new TMS directly into their hands. Rather than simply replacing our previous portal, we've taken the opportunity to rethink the experience from the ground up. Booking, tracking, invoicing, reporting and account management now sit within a single environment, giving customers greater visibility, more control and quicker access to the information they need. The result is a fully self-service environment where customers can access live pricing, book freight, track consignments, retrieve documents, run reports and manage their account from one place. From a single login, customers can: Get instant prices and book freight in seconds , with live pricing across our range of transport services. Manage more of their logistics in one place , with pallet network, general haulage, full loads and contract logistics brought together within one connected environment. Know where their freight is and when it's arriving, with dynamic tracking, live status updates, two-hour delivery windows, ETAs and notifications. See what's happening at collection and delivery , with photographs providing a visual record at both ends of the consignment journey. Find important documents without having to chase for them, with instant access to invoices, proof of delivery, rates and account information. Give the right people the right level of access , with user and permission management across their organisation. Spend less time on repetitive administration , using reusable booking presets, bulk imports, scheduled bookings and API integration. Turn live information into greater visibility , with reporting and operational data available across their account. For customers processing larger or more frequent volumes, Touchbase can automate routine processes through API integrations and bulk imports, reducing manual administration while maintaining live visibility across every consignment. And the experience doesn't stop when a booking is submitted. Touchbase connects what the customer sees with the applications being used by Browns drivers, warehouse teams and operational colleagues. As a consignment progresses, information captured throughout the operation can feed back into the same system, creating a continuous digital record from collection through to delivery. For our customers, that means less chasing for updates, fewer disconnected systems and much greater visibility over what's happening with their freight. Putting our data to work with AI AI has been embedded into Touchbase from the very beginning, working behind the scenes across millions of operational data points to automate time-consuming tasks, speed up processes and help our teams get to the information they need faster. One example is document matching. When proof of delivery, customer paperwork, driver manifests and other documents enter the system, AI-powered vision technology can read and understand them, identify the relevant consignments and automatically associate the documents with the correct jobs. What previously required someone to work through paperwork and manually match documents can now happen automatically. We're also introducing Sidekick , our internal AI assistant built directly into Touchbase. Colleagues can ask Sidekick questions about jobs, loads and other operational information and get answers using the live data already held within the platform. It can also help with tasks such as setting reminders, giving our teams a quicker and more natural way to interact with the information they use every day. With millions of data points flowing through Touchbase, AI gives us new ways to put that information to work. Rather than replacing the people behind our service, we're using it to take care of repetitive administration, reduce manual work and give our teams more time to focus on customers and moving freight. What comes next As we enter this next chapter, it's also an opportunity to reflect on the partnerships that have helped us get here. We'd like to thank everyone at HaulTech for their support over many years. Their software has played an important role in Browns' growth, and we've valued the relationship we've built along the way. As our technology strategy evolves, we wish the entire HaulTech team every success for the future as they continue supporting transport businesses across the industry. Touchbase represents the next step for Browns. For the first time, we have a technology platform developed around our own operation, shaped by decades of experience and built with our customers at its heart. It's a big change, but one that gives us greater control over how our technology develops alongside the business. And, much like Browns itself, Touchbase won't stand still. We'll continue developing it, learning from our customers and our team, and building technology that helps us deliver a better logistics experience for the years ahead.

Inside Browns: the £24m haulier using data to build a smarter business

Originally published by Motor Transport, 12th August 2026. From AI-powered customer service and a bespoke transport management system to a waiting list of drivers, Browns Distribution is using better data to sharpen its operation and support continued growth. Walk into most transport offices and you can quickly sense the pressure points: information being chased, updates gathered and people relying on experience to keep everything moving. At Browns, it feels different. Every movement, every scan, every customer interaction and every operational decision feeds into a wider digital picture of the business. The operation is built around visibility, systems and data, giving the team better information, faster decisions and greater control. For MD David Brown Jnr, that is simply the way a modern transport company should operate. Every week, the senior management team reviews profit and loss, divisional profitability, fuel costs, agency spend, market conditions and competitor activity. Decisions are expected to be backed by evidence rather than instinct. But despite leading a £24m business from a new, purpose-built £8.2m facility, Brown comes across as disarmingly modest. One of the more revealing moments comes when he talks about his own workspace. After relocating to the Stoke-On-Trent headquarters in February 2023, Brown fully expected his old desk and filing cabinets to come with him. But the interior designers insisted he needed new furniture and a much larger room with space to meet customers and staff. “I remember standing there thinking, ‘This is too big. I can’t work from here.’ I genuinely had imposter syndrome,” he laughs. These days the office is simply another meeting space, but the story says much about Brown's priorities. The building itself was never about creating an impressive headquarters. It was about giving the business, its customers and its staff the facilities they needed to work better. But Brown is equally interested in what is happening beyond his own walls. "I read all the industry news so I can see what's happening," he says. "I look at what other people are doing. I look at what other people are not doing well." He is often surprised that more operators are not embracing the same approach. "What are they doing if they're not looking two or three years ahead?" he adds. "What are we doing?" If something catches his eye, he'll instantly message the marketing team. "You've got to have the information behind you to make the right decisions," he says. That mindset runs through every part of Browns' operation. Artificial intelligence now handles the first stage of the company's live customer chat, resolving around 70% of enquiries before they ever reach a member of staff. "If we didn't do that 70%, I'd need nearly double," Brown says. The transport planning team works from live systems rather than paperwork. Vehicle movements, freight allocation and customer information are all visible in real time. Whiteboards still exist, but not for planning. "What we haven't got is plans on the desk. We've not got sheets with driver names on desks; that's all on the system," Brown explains. The same thinking continues in the warehouse. Every pallet is scanned, tracked and allocated, creating a detailed audit trail from arrival to dispatch. If freight does not need to be put away before leaving the site, the system identifies the most efficient route, reducing unnecessary handling. That emphasis on connected information is now being brought together in Touchbase, Browns' new transport management system, developed entirely by the company's own software team. Rather than adapting an off-the-shelf platform, Browns has built the system around the way its customers actually move freight. It links customers, drivers, warehouse teams and planners through a single live platform, giving customers self-service booking, tracking, invoicing and reporting, while providing operational teams with real-time visibility across every consignment. "It's fuel saving," Brown explains. "Anything that makes us not handle and not touch freight unnecessarily. It all goes down to the bottom line." Perfect balance The most striking thing about Browns is the way all the technology connects. The company is using data because transport is too complex to rely purely on instinct. A modern logistics operation is balancing vehicles, drivers, customers, warehouse capacity, compliance requirements, fuel costs, service expectations and financial pressures all at the same time. That customer-focused mindset is also helping Browns win new business. The company has recently secured a contract logistics partnership worth more than £1m a year with a Staffordshire manufacturer of commercial warewashing equipment. The agreement will see Browns operate a dedicated dual-liveried fleet, handling both palletised freight and specialist deliveries across the UK and Ireland. Rather than simply providing transport, Browns has designed a fully managed logistics solution combining dedicated fleet operations with its pallet network capability. It’s the sort of tailored approach Brown believes customers are increasingly looking for. The phrase is fitting because the same approach applies internally. Browns constantly looks beneath the surface of its own operation. For some people, learning a new system or exploring artificial intelligence would feel like an additional task. For Brown, it is the opposite. “It’s not work for me,” he says. “It’s just like, oh, we can do that.” Brown's enthusiasm for technology is deeply rooted. His father was an early adopter within the transport industry and went on to build a transport management software business. "Technology and marketing are just a natural interest of mine," Brown says. "It's not a chore." The design of the headquarters reflects the same philosophy. A vast undercover canopy allows freight to move between trailers and the warehouse without unnecessary handling or exposure to the weather, while trailers themselves are used as temporary holding areas to keep products flowing through the operation. Cleaner fleet Technology is not the only area where Browns takes a measured approach. The company has also invested heavily in keeping its fleet young and efficient. The business currently operates more than 70 artics and around 110 trailers, with an average fleet age of approximately 2.5 years. “We’re all Euro-6,” Brown says. “We feel we’ve got the cleanest fleet in Staffordshire.” But while Browns is willing to embrace new technology, tellingly it is not prepared to adopt it simply for the sake of appearing innovative or fashionable. “We actually don’t run any electric trucks,” Brown says. “We tried some, but we couldn’t quite get it to stack up for our business. The cost wasn’t quite there. We don’t have any dedicated lane movements where we can allocate the risk of battery deficiency. It’s logistics, opportunities and customers.” What also becomes clear very quickly is that this is not a business trying to remove people from the operation. The systems are there because Brown believes people perform better when they have the right information, the right support and a genuine connection with the business around them. That philosophy is perhaps most obvious when the conversation turns to drivers. But simply increasing wages is not the whole answer. “Everyone wants paying more money. It would be nice, wouldn’t it?” he smiles. “But we’re very open with our drivers. We say, ‘look, you see the margins. When the customers can afford to pay more, it comes through. The company benefits, you benefit, we reinvest’.” “You have to explain it,” he says. “It’s not the operator that’s the problem. We all want to earn more money. But when there is more opportunity, everybody benefits.” The approach appears to be working. While many operators are constantly advertising for drivers, Browns has built a position where it has a waiting list. Instead of immediately going to job boards, it uses its own network, communicating through WhatsApp and email before moving to platforms such as Indeed. “We have to be proactive on drivers,” David says. “You can’t just sit there and wait for them to come to you.” The business also runs open days and an expression-of-interest process for prospective drivers. “We have guys who want to come and work with us,” he says. “That’s quite unusual, isn’t it?” Browns has a driver committee, with representatives from the fleet feeding back concerns, ideas and suggestions into the management team. The purpose is not simply to collect complaints; it is to identify issues that can actually be acted upon. “We don’t call them lead drivers,” David says. “We have a head of that committee, and he listens to the drivers. But we want real meaningful, actionable insight from the fleet.” The same principle applies to the wider workforce. Browns has invested in a new HR manager, whose role is focused on developing the employee experience beyond traditional HR administration. The company also holds family days, Christmas events and team activities, all funded by the business. It invests in facilities and tries to create an environment where drivers, warehouse staff and office teams feel connected. “When we do anything, we want everybody to have an input,” he says. That approach is visible throughout the site. The warehouse team has its own facilities. The workshop has its own canteen. The drivers have a dedicated reception area rather than arriving through a cramped office environment. “You don’t want drivers and workshop together,” he says. “Because it becomes, ‘Can you do me this now?’ or ‘Can you fix me that?’ We wanted to give them their own space.” In the office canteen, customer feedback is displayed on screens alongside recognition for high-performing employees. But David is careful about how this is done. “We never show the bottom of the league,” he says. “We show the top.” The team sees positive feedback, performance achievements and customer comments. It creates a visible connection between the work people do every day and the response from customers. And this is where the technology story comes back, with the customer service team being a good example. The AI live chat system handles the straightforward questions, allowing employees to focus on more complex conversations. The transport office uses systems to remove paperwork and allow planners to concentrate on decisions rather than administration. Mission Control During the tour of the transport office, that difference is obvious. It is busy, but calm. People are working across different platforms, dealing with customers and managing operations, but there is no sense of panic. “We’re busy. We’re really busy,” Brown says. “But we try and stay on top of it as best as we can.” The company has essentially created a people-first business supported by technology. And that may be the biggest difference between Browns and many businesses looking at digital transformation. Here, technology is simply the tool allowing the people to do a better job. He believes there is a danger in relying on traditional methods simply because they are familiar. But the old model of relying on experience alone is becoming harder to sustain. The business has invested heavily in digital tools, but it has also invested in communication, training and relationships. It has built meeting spaces rather than just more desks. It has created separate areas for different teams. It has encouraged feedback from drivers and employees. The technology provides the information. The culture determines what happens with it. That is perhaps why Brown is reluctant to describe the firm simply as a technology company or an innovative haulage business. For him, it is still about doing the basics exceptionally well. The technology is there to make those things easier. One of the strongest impressions from visiting the site is that the systems have not created a colder or more automated business. Instead, they have created more space for people to focus on the parts of the job that matter. The absence of chaos is because Browns has built a structure designed to handle every challenge. When asked what keeps him awake at night, he initially struggles to identify one single thing: “The financials, the service, keeping people happy,” he says. But then he considers it further. The biggest challenge is staying prepared. Without resorting to the tired cliché of working smarter not harder, this is clearly a company that changed the way it thinks first, then used technology to support that thinking. The result is a different kind of transport business: one where AI helps answer customer questions, where data guides decisions, where systems remove unnecessary work and where people remain at the centre. The wider message for haulage is clear; the future will not belong only to the companies with the biggest fleets or the most vehicles on the road. It will belong to those that understand their operation best.

Supporting the Next Generation in Logistics

This week, our Media Hub has been handed over to Luo Chen , who joined Browns Distribution for a week of work experience. Throughout the week, Luo has been getting a behind-the-scenes look at life in a busy logistics business, spending time with different departments and taking on a range of marketing and business projects. As part of the takeover, this article has been written by Luo, sharing his experience, what he learned during the week and his thoughts on working at Browns Distribution. Without further ado, it's over to you, Luo Chen! "Before my work experience placement, I had virtually no knowledge about logistics. Browns has changed that. As a local Year 10 student, my placement was arranged for the week connecting June and July of 2026. It was scheduled from Monday to Friday, 5 hours each day. The aims of my placement were to: Learn about essential work skills by experiencing a work environment. To understand if this sector would be suitable for me in the future. With Tom Armstrong, Marketing Manager , guiding me through various aspects of Browns, I have felt like I have thoroughly achieved these aims. Throughout the week, I have learned from, inquired into and shadowed the roles of various staff, including the Driver Training Manager, Customer Support Team, Marketing Manager, Warehouse Manager and PalletOnline Manager. I have discovered various, often overlooked complexities of the logistics sector and how they all intertwine through the different departments in Browns in order to create the direct services that logistics aims to offer. It has been incredibly interesting for me to realise the finer details of how businesses operate and the integral roles and contributions of every staff member to a smooth service for customers. Such a broad range of perspectives and advice has truly provided the plethora of valuable insight needed for me to understand Browns as it really is. I believe that the fact that Browns aims to support the local community and inspire the next generation of logistics professionals is notably commendable; actions which don't lead to profit do not occur in every business, especially through the form of a work experience placement to support local education. I think this accurately summarises what the internal culture is like here - a positive, collaborative and community-oriented one. I am sincerely grateful for this opportunity where I have developed much-needed skills and knowledge, both for a workplace and life in general. I have felt actively engaged in learning about logistics the entire week, and am now considering it a lot more for my future than ever before. Thank you Tom and Browns Distribution!" Luo Chen He

Browns Goes Green for Mental Health Awareness Week

The team at Browns Distribution came together for Wear it Green Day, raising an incredible £233 for the Mental Health Foundation. Held at Distribution House, the day brought the team together in support of an important cause, with green outfits across the site, a team raffle with prizes up for grabs, and Domino’s pizza to keep everyone fuelled throughout the day. Wear it Green Day is part of Mental Health Awareness Week, a UK-wide campaign organised by the Mental Health Foundation. The campaign takes place every May and aims to highlight the importance of good mental health, challenge stigma, and encourage practical action to support wellbeing. The Mental Health Foundation has been leading Mental Health Awareness Week for the last 25 years. As the only UK charity solely focused on preventing poor mental health, the organisation works through research, campaigning, and practical programmes to help build and protect good mental health. Wear it Green Day encourages schools, workplaces, communities, families, and friends to wear green, raise awareness, start conversations, and fundraise to support the Mental Health Foundation’s vital work. Driving Forward with New Fleet Additions

We are pleased to announce the arrival of four new Mercedes-Benz Actros L 2548 trucks, delivered in March 2026, as part of our ongoing investment in a modern and high-performing fleet. These latest additions build on our continued commitment to Mercedes-Benz vehicles in recent years, following the introduction of three Actros 2546 trucks in 2023 and six Actros L 2548 trucks in 2024. The new trucks further strengthen a well-balanced fleet that operates across three leading manufacturers, alongside Scania and MAN. This investment reflects our ongoing focus on efficiency, driver comfort, and safety across its operations. The Actros range is renowned for its advanced technology, fuel efficiency, and driver-focused design, aligning closely with the our operational standards. We also maintain a robust fleet rotation policy, ensuring no articulated vehicle remains in service for more than five years. The new vehicles will be deployed on general haulage duties across the UK. Lindy Crawford, Transport Manager at Browns Distribution, commented: We’ve had consistently positive feedback from both our drivers and operational teams on the Mercedes-Benz trucks. Their reliability, comfort, and the quality of telematics data they provide make a real difference to our day-to-day operations. We’re always looking to invest in the very best equipment to support our teams and deliver the highest levels of service for our customers. The new Actros units are finished in a special 70th anniversary livery, marking the conclusion of our milestone celebrations last year and reflecting both our heritage and our continued commitment to the future.
