PALLETLINE WEIGHS UP SAFETY ISSUE WITH LIFT ASSIST
Palletline has become the first pallet network to introduce a lower weight restriction for standard tail lift deliveries from October 1.
The new tail lift weight restriction that Palletline will be enforcing across its network – as voted for by its members – will be 750kg or under, compared to current industry limits of 1000 kg in order to protect drivers and customers from injury.
The company, which has secured two safety awards from Motor Transport and has achieved RoSPA gold accreditation on three occasions, has at the same time introduced a new service – Lift Assist – which means that drivers will still be able to safely deliver a one tonne pallet with enhanced handling equipment.
The evolution of the market place has seen a significant increase in the internet-enabled home delivery sector which is expected to grow to 1.35 billion deliveries per year by 2018, with homeware, including heavy white goods, predicted to rise to 31 per cent of all final mile business, according to research from Barclays.*
The Lift Assist uses appropriate materials handling equipment and is designed to protect customers and drivers from loads falling off the back of trucks after being carried by their own weight momentum during the unloading. The 750 Kg load limit is expected to become the industry norm and that the other members of the Association of Pallet Networks (APN) will follow the Palletline lead.
Managing director Graham Leitch said: “Palletline is handling greater volumes than ever before, yet we continue to enhance our health and safety processes which means we continue to be recognised as an industry leader that wins awards and recognition for our high standards. With this in mind and as a network that truly values the work of its employees and members – we realise that a quality, efficient service should never put anybody at risk – so we have made a brave and pioneering decision that will help protect staff and should set an industry precedent.
“I know the majority of pallet networks and the RHA are in favour of reducing limits, however Palletline is proud to be the first network to take action and put the safety of drivers ahead of commercial considerations. Embracing the measure early has provided members of Palletline with the opportunity to open discussions with their customers enabling them to review their own processes, minimise any impact, stay ahead of their competition and demonstrate commitment to driver safety.”
